Hydrosalpinx - Fluid Accumulation in the Fallopian Tubes and Risks

Hydrosalpinx is a disease that occurs as a result of the fluid filling of the fallopian tubes, which are located on the right and left sides of the female body, one end of which opens to the uterus and the other end to the abdominal cavity. Hydrosalpinx is caused by the obstruction of the end of the fallopian tubes that open into the abdominal cavity.

Fallopian tubes have an important function in terms of reproduction. One of the developing eggs comes out of the ovary by cracking the incision it is in and is caught by the fallopian tubes. Pregnancy occurs when the egg encounters sperm in the fallopian tubes. In order to get natural pregnancy, one of the tubes must be healthy. In addition, in order to achieve success in the IVF method, it should be treated in the presence of hydrosalpinx.

Risks of Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx may develop due to infection in the fallopian tubes, surgical intervention or endometriosis. If the fallopian tubes are blocked, it may be difficult to get pregnancy. In addition, it increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage of a pregnancy caused by the toxic effect of the accumulated fluid. In hydrosalpinx cases, in order to become pregnant, the tubes must be tied or removed.

Symptoms of Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx is not a condition that can be easily noticed by individuals who do not have the idea of pregnancy. Mild hydrosalpinx often does not cause any symptoms. However, in individuals with severe hydrosalpinx, it may show symptoms with severe groin and abdominal pain.

If the fluid accumulated in the tube flows into the uterus, it may cause discharge in the intermenstrual period.

Hydrosalpinx can cause infertility or recurrent miscarriages. Women with this condition should be evaluated for hydrosalpinx.

Diagnosis of Hydrosalpinx

The diagnosis of hydrosalpinx is made by ultrasound or uterine tube film (hysterosalpingography). Ultrasound may also be insufficient for a definitive diagnosis. While the definitive diagnosis is made by laparoscopy, it is also treated by this method.

Hydrosalpinx Treatment

The definitive treatment of hydrosalpinx is surgery. The surgery can be performed by laparoscopy (closed surgery) method. Generally, surgical intervention is performed in the form of ligation or removal of the tube, which is structurally irreversibly damaged due to infection, adhesions and high amounts of fluid accumulation. Rarely, mild adhesions are opened and treatment is performed in the tubes.
